CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Laurent
Character Canon: Fire Emblem: Awakening

History: Wikia!

AU History:

(I'm keeping things about Laurent's parents vague in the hopes he gets his canon parents one day in game and they're keen on meshing AUs.)

Laurent was born into a rather wealthy family in the Union, both parents Enlightened and his mother a dedicated Scientist in a developing field. Because of this, Laurent was often left alone while his parents worked and grew up with the books in his mother's library. At a young age, his daytime caretakers noticed that the boy seemed a bit more odd than other children his age. Beyond his love for reading as opposed to running around and screaming like a "normal" child, Laurent would focus on keeping things tidy and in order and would be very ornery if this was stopped. He was also a bit slower to talk than most children, but due to his reading his comprehension was high and from a young age he knew a vast amount of hard vocabulary. Because of this, his mother decided to pay closer attention to her son to make sure nothing was off about his mental state. He was enrolled into a private school that monitored such things, for highly intelligent (or rich) children, and looked after there. At ten years old, the first sign of his Enlightenment showed when he was walking to his classroom with a handful of other students and he was pushed by a larger, impatient boy. His head was knocked against the wall and the other children were knocked to the floor when a telekinetic burst hit them, striking them confused for a full hour until the teachers were able to make them come around. Since then, he has learned to control the blasts of confusion he's able to propel at people and because of this has turned further into his books than ever before. Now at sixteen, Laurent is still enrolled in school.

Canon Personality:

Miriel's future son. A sharp but over serious wunderkind. Folks take advantage of his wisdom and empathy, but his attention to detail makes him a natural problem solver. The one with the worst lens glare. Born on April 25th.

Laurent is an extremely well spoken young man, who gets his vocabulary skill from his mother as well as her tendencies to be deliberately logical and cold about nearly everything. His closest relationship seems to be with his mother, Miriel, who he tries to emulate and better himself towards. When they meet in the past, Laurent has been alone for five years and almost losing hope he'll ever see his mother again (who he's not sure might even be dead in the future due to her body never being found,) so he instantly responds to seeing her again and joining up with her to battle. Afterward, he expresses that he's her son and that he's been looking for her for a long time. Miriel shoots him down instantly saying he could have killed her true son and taken her wedding ring himself but she won't rule out the possibility that he could be her son as well. That's the sort of relationship they have. He vies for her attention by reading and studying all he can and helping her with experiments even after she won't believe him. He strives to become like her to the point of idolization.

In his supports with his father (who can be any first generation male in the game and therefore won't be mentioned by name,) Laurent is very standoffish to him. It starts off with his father asking if he inherited anything from him, since Laurent is so alike to his mother, which Laurent only replies with "the color of my hair." They begin to talk and Laurent becomes flustered when asked about his age. He starts showing more emotion to his father when his father finds out that Laurent's spent nearly five years all alone in the future without anyone around him as he searches desperately for his family and friends. His father comes to understand him more from this, when previously he'd only seen Laurent as a child trying to act grown up. Laurent is only trying to protect those around him by scolding and looking after them because he doesn't want to lose anyone twice.

When doing Laurent's supports with Severa, we find out that Laurent takes care of the camp's entire budget. He works with numbers throughout the day and keeps everything in its place. He scolds her for using the army's funds for buying things not on the list and therefore putting them over budget, even by a little at a time. He doesn't understand why she would want to get things the army doesn't necessarily need, even if it's something like fruit or sweets to boost morale. Eventually they end up convening and shopping together to stay on budget and get what the army would enjoy, to praise from everyone else. This shows that while Laurent is strict and bossy, he can compromise and care about others, as well as portray his abilities to keep everything in its place.

Gerome's supports with Laurent are more so for Gerome's sake, rather than Laurent's development, but they show the extent of his care for the camp and others quite a bit despite thinking he may be only cold and bossy from the beginning. We find out that every day, Laurent goes around the camp and checks on everything for everyone (even though his supports with the Main Character show that they do this also?). He makes sure the weapons and food are stocked and that everyone is safe. We find out that it's Gerome that's asked him to do this, but Laurent does it selflessly. Again, he would much rather keep track of everyone himself and make sure everyone's safe so he won't lose them. He expresses these feelings to Gerome, that they should both care for everyone in camp, and eventually Gerome agrees with him and goes with him to check on everyone the last day of their supports.

Laurent's supports with Lucina are probably the most telling of all his supports with the future children. Laurent instantly knows that Lucina is injured, even when she's resolved not to tell anyone about it. He shows this kind of observance in all of his supports (knowing that someone's injured, or that they aren't fighting at their best, etc,) but in his supports with Lucina he goes on to get her healed and expresses that she should stop pushing herself and think of herself instead of everyone around her. She retaliates by reminding him that he does the same thing and this seems to have a profound impact on him. He doesn't think of himself first, but other people around him. We never see Laurent worrying about himself or what he should do, and he only seems to want to better himself to support others. Lucina helps him see this, though at the end they only decide to look out for each other and defeat the purpose of becoming a little more selfish entirely.

In most aspects, Laurent seems cold and high strung before you get to know him as a kind, caring person who perhaps would like to mother other people more than his own mother ever did for him.

AU Deviation:

For one, Laurent isn't in the middle of trying to save the future in a medieval war, so he's not as stressed out about losing people. The fact that his mother works so much makes him worry about other people overworking themselves though, and drives him to want to take care of people even if it's a little less than his canon self would. Still, when he's gotten to know someone he'll probably treat them like a baby. It's what drives him to want to be a doctor or a researcher, to find out how to help people.

Canon Abilities:

*Spell casting from grimoires and tomes.
*Very high intellect, including heightened problem solving and thought process.
*Hyper focused about many things, able to juggle many tasks at once, such as balancing the army's budget as well as keeping track of everyone's health and status.
*Research of the application of skills, rather than the skills themselves.

Enlightened Abilities: Fire/Psychic - Analyst

His first Enlightened skill will be Confusion, due to his large amount of knowledge and his difficulty conveying himself. More often than not someone will respond to him in a "ah... in English please?" sort of manner.

His second Enlightend skill will be Future Sight, due to his ability in canon to point out what's wrong with camp and if others are injured, as well as his keen eye on the battle field.

His third Enlightened skill will be Mystic Fire, due to his base abilities as a mage when you meet him are fire centric and the animation for the mage's attacks looks a lot like Mystic Fire ok.

If Laurent is permitted an item, I'd like him to have his Fire Tome from canon.

Starter Pokémon: Solosis, who has no nickname because Laurent is super boring and lame.

Test Drive!

Third-Person:

The test was for aptitude, and didn't count for any grade in class, but Laurent was determined to write down meaningful answers. Te other students, for the most part, had already finished up and handed in the paper but he lingered in class, staring at the questions on his paper.
"What do you feel your role in the Union is?"
That was easy. His role as to follow in his mother's footsteps as a scientist, to further their human lives alongside Pokemon. "A researcher, or a scientist." He had decided that long before he'd even been in school, from what he'd read as a child and from looking up to his mother's career.
"What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?"
"This one is easy too," he murmured, pushing his glasses up his nose as he put his pen back to the paper. "Intelligence, willpower... Patience." He had bonded with Solosis right away, due to his ability to reason and help with Laurent's studies, along with his patience staying up with him long after curfew reading and researching...
"What do you think your Pokémon respect most about you?"
That one was a little harder. He tapped his cheek a moment, hesitating. For a Psychic Enlightened, why was it so hard for him to comprehend Solosis's feelings? Especially its feelings toward him. "I suppose my diligence," he finally put down. "The thing a Pokemon respects the least is a poor attitude and the inclination to give up when things become difficult. If at first you don't succeed, and so forth."
"A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend?"
Laurent let out a sigh. What a loaded question. "The first course of action would be to access the situation, though it would prove difficult when considering the Pokemon could not speak in its own defense. Then one would have to ask one's self whether or not the human had a right to attack the Pokemon and for what reasons. Was the Pokemon a threat? Is the Pokemon considered a delicacy?" He crossed out his poor attempt at a joke, "in the end, I would only choose a side with all the facts gathered before me."
"You plunge into the depths of the Old City. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?"
Laurent would love to see the Old City. His mother's told him about it on occasion, and he's looking forward to the day he can make the journey himself. "Knowledge," he wrote, "for with knowledge I attain wisdom and, in succession, technology and wealth. I would journey for any ancient text not already recovered, study old architecture and try and understand the comportment of our ancestors. Looking to the past is the way into the future."
"When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?"
"Research," he wrote at once, before pressing the end of his pen to his lip a moment. A rare, powerful Pokemon... "Though it deserves more than just that. To truly revere it, I would do my best to make a bond with this Pokemon. I can only assume it would possess the intelligence to recognize my willingness to befriend it and react accordingly. If it could not recognize my true intentions, it would raise question in my mind to how powerful it truly was. Is that were the case, my true challenge would be to make a difficult bond and access its true strengths myself."

Looking around himself, Laurent sighed a little. He was the last one there, and the teacher was waiting impatiently at their desk for him. Getting up, he collected his things, submitted the paper, and left the room.
